Biography
Hofesh Shechter OBE is widely recognized as one of the most compelling and influential artists on today’s contemporary dance scene. He is renowned not only for his distinctive choreographic language, but also for composing original musical scores that intensify the raw physicality and emotional force of his works.
He is the Artistic Director of the Hofesh Shechter Company, founded in 2008.
Creations for the company include Uprising, In your rooms, The Art of Not Looking Back, Sun, Political Mother, Political Mother: The Choreographer’s Cut, barbarians, Grand Finale, and SHOW for the junior company Shechter II.
His works are performed by many of the world’s leading dance companies, including the The Royal Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, Netherlands Dance Theatre, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Candoco Dance Company, Batsheva Ensemble, and the Royal Ballet of Flanders.
Beyond dance, Shechter has worked extensively as a choreographer for theatre, television, and opera.
In 2016, he received a Tony Award nomination for the choreography of the Broadway musical Fiddler on the Roof. In 2018, he was awarded the title of OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) for his services to dance. In the same year, the BBC successfully produced the film Hofesh Shechter’s Clown.
The Hofesh Shechter Company is resident company at the Brighton Dome, and Shechter is Associate Artist at Sadler's Wells in London.
