Biography

TAO Dance Theater is a contemporary dance company based in Beijing.
Founded in 2008 by choreographers Tao Ye, Duan Ni, and producer Wang Hao, the company has developed an innovative approach to movement through a body technique known as the Circular Movement System.
At the heart of their artistic philosophy lies the idea of a pure form of dance, achieved through the “ritual repetition of the body’s natural movements.” Their work invites audiences to focus intensely on the repeated gesture in its most essential form, stripped of ornament and theatrical excess.
TAO Dance Theater has been presented on some of the world’s most prestigious stages, including the Lincoln Center in New York, the Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London, the Sydney Opera House and the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris.
At Venice, TAO Dance Theater presents 11, 13, and 14, three works from the ongoing Series of Numbers, a choreographic cycle begun in 2008.
Through its radically minimalist aesthetic, the series has further defined the artistic language developed by Tao Ye and Duan Ni, pushing repetition to an almost extreme level in a search for truth through the body itself.
