Biography
Tony Hadley is one of the most celebrated male vocalists on the international music scene, enjoying a career that has spanned more than four decades. Rising to fame as the charismatic frontman of Spandau Ballet, one of the defining bands of the New Romantic movement, he lent his unmistakable voice to songs that have become enduring classics, including the epic Through the Barricades, the worldwide hit True, and Gold, often regarded as the unofficial anthem of the London Olympic Games.
With Spandau Ballet, Hadley achieved global success, topping charts around the world, earning multiple Gold and Platinum records, and performing on major stages across the globe.
As a solo artist, he has built an equally successful career, captivating audiences through large-scale live performances with his Fabulous TH Band, swing ensembles and symphony orchestras. His solo discography includes several acclaimed releases, among them Talking to the Moon (2018, released in Italy in 2019), which was named Album of the Week on BBC Radio 2, while its lead single Tonight Belongs to Us received Single of the Week honours.
In 2021, Hadley released Obvious, co-written with Mick Lister. The track was warmly received by critics and featured on major BBC Radio 2 playlists.
Demonstrating his remarkable versatility, in 2024 he released The Mood I’m In, a sophisticated swing album celebrating the timeless repertoire of the Great American Songbook. The project further confirmed his ability to move effortlessly between musical genres while maintaining his distinctive style and elegance.
Beyond music, Tony Hadley has also distinguished himself in other areas of entertainment. In 2007, he introduced himself to a new generation of audiences through his acclaimed portrayal of Billy Flynn in the West End production of Chicago in London.
For many years he has also hosted his own Sunday radio programme on BBC Three Counties Radio, further showcasing his talent as a broadcaster and entertainer.
Throughout his career, Hadley has received numerous accolades, including the Gold Badge Award from the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters in 2005. In December 2019, he was appointed MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the Queen’s New Year Honours List, in recognition of his charitable work supporting Shooting Star Children’s Hospice.
With his unmistakable voice, commanding stage presence and enduring appeal, Tony Hadley continues to captivate audiences worldwide, reaffirming his status as one of the great vocalists of contemporary pop and swing music.
