Uno spettacolo di storie e canzoni
Jorge and Marcelo Coulon, founding members of the legendary Chilean ensemble Inti-Illimani, return to Italy for a unique theatrical and musical production alongside Tuscan singer-songwriter Giulio Wilson and writer Federico Bonadonna.
In viaggio con gli Inti-Illimani is a new live show that intertwines music, storytelling and memory, tracing nearly sixty years of history through the voices and experiences of one of the most influential groups in Latin American music.
At the heart of the performance is an imaginary train connecting Italy and Chile, travelling beyond borders and across generations. Passing through cities such as Florence, Rome, Bucharest and Berlin, each stop becomes an encounter, each station a story. On board, Giulio Wilson and Federico Bonadonna meet Jorge and Marcelo Coulon, revisiting the remarkable journey of Inti-Illimani through songs, memories and reflections.
Through a kaleidoscope of music and narrative, the four artists recount the history of the ensemble, founded in 1967 by a group of university students that included Jorge and Marcelo Coulon, Horacio Durán, José Seves, José Miguel Camus, Horacio Salinas and Max Berrú. Their story became inseparable from the political history of Chile when, following the military coup of September 11, 1973, the group found itself unable to return home and spent fifteen years in exile in Italy.
The performance follows this extraordinary journey, from the group’s earliest recordings to Agua, an album created between Florence and Santiago de Chile between 2020 and 2022, featuring songs in both Italian and Spanish written by Giulio Wilson.
More than a concert, In viaggio con gli Inti-Illimani is a crossroads of encounters. It revisits the legacies of Violeta Parra and Víctor Jara, explores decades of artistic commitment, and reflects on themes of exile, identity, democracy and hope. Through music and storytelling, the audience travels from the years of dictatorship and displacement to the return home, following the dreams, struggles and aspirations of an entire people.
Produced by IMARTS and conceived by record producer Paolo Maorino, the show was written by Federico Bonadonna and Giulio Wilson, with direction by Wilson himself.
This “train of emotions” carries audiences across the Andes on the wings of the condor, where the sounds of traditional Latin American instruments—pan flutes, rondador, charango and other ancestral instruments—meet songs that have become universal anthems, including Gracias a la Vida, El Aparecido, El Pueblo Unido, and Vale la Pena.
For decades, Inti-Illimani have stood as ambassadors of Latin American culture and symbols of resistance against dictatorship, injustice and oppression. Through their music, they have championed democracy, human rights, social progress and cultural memory, always placing particular emphasis on dialogue with younger generations.
In viaggio con gli Inti-Illimani brings to the stage the story of a group that helped shape the cultural history of the modern world: a story of artists united by ideals, of music as a force for connection, and of humanity finding its voice through song.
