Coreography  Paul Taylor

Scenes and costumes  Santo Loquasto

Lights Jennifer Tipton

(first representation 1997)

“...The imperfect confusion of human beings... worn down as if by the work of hands, soaked in sweat and smoke, scented with lilies and urine, splashed by the labor of what we do, legally or illegally... impure like old clothes, like a body, with its food stains and shames, with wrinkles, observations, dreams, sleepless nights, prophecies, declarations of love and hatred, foolishness, shocks, idylls, political convictions, denials, doubts, affirmations...”
— Pablo Neruda

Piazzolla Caldera transforms tango into theatrical form, exploring the solitude of the woman whom no one invites to dance, the dynamics of the male couple, the shifting configurations of a trio, and the virility of the macho gesture.

ESPLANADE

Musicc Johann Sebastian Bach

Violino Concerto in Mi Maggiore, Concerto per due  violini  in Re minore (Largo & Allegro )

Coreography Paul Taylor

Costumes John Rawlings

Lights  Jennifer Tipton

(first representation 1975)

The title Esplanade evokes the idea of a promenade or leisurely walk.
Paul Taylor was inspired by the sight of a young woman hurrying to catch a bus and transformed that everyday image into a choreographic masterpiece.
Just as visual artists such as Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg incorporated “ordinary found objects” — like a Coca-Cola bottle or the American flag — into their art, Taylor brought “ordinary movements of daily life” into dance.
Walking, running, falling, sliding, and standing become part of the choreographic vocabulary and the very essence of the style.
In doing so, Taylor created a true classic of American dance, giving rhythmic dimension and poetic resonance to the gestures of everyday life.
