Notes on the Performance

Presented for the first time at the Festival d’Ambronay in September 2022, Phénix once again challenges and reshapes the traditional boundaries between musicians and dancers.
The performance was born from the unexpected and singular encounter between hip-hop dance and the viola da gamba, a string instrument that flourished during the seventeenth century. Four dancers engage in dialogue with the instrument, while electronic textures by Arandel reinforce the expressive power of this unusual collaboration.
Continuing his artistic exploration of openness and exchange between different aesthetics, Mourad Merzouki brings together two seemingly opposite disciplines to create a performance that is both delicate and unique.
Within an intimate atmosphere, the artists intertwine their worlds and give life to an original creation elevated by the alchemy between music and movement.
