One of the world’s most acclaimed hip hop companies pays passionate tribute to musical cinema.
The unstoppable energy of the group led by Riyad Fghani — founded in the late 1990s on the square outside the Opéra de Lyon — continues to dominate major international competitions while touring the world to overwhelming acclaim.
Inventive and deeply passionate, Pockemon Crew explores in this creation two artistic worlds that profoundly inspire them: cinema and the origins of certain hip hop dance movements.
The performance becomes a true immersion into the black-and-white musical films of the 1930s and 1940s, whose musical comedies echo, in many ways, the vitality, creativity, and exuberance of hip hop culture itself.
Sets and costumes transport the audience into the golden age of Hollywood musicals — recalling figures such as Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Vincente Minnelli, and Stanley Donen — while the dancers explore the roots of their movement vocabulary with both frenzy and poetry, preserving the spontaneous energy of the “seventh art.”
The production also serves as a tribute to the city that welcomed and inspired them: Lyon, birthplace of cinema itself through the pioneering work of the Lumière brothers in 1895.
