Founded in 1995, the São Paulo-based musical group has developed throughout its career a unique approach to body music through compositions, techniques, exploration of timbres and its own creative procedures.
Through the research and creation of Fernando Barba, who also worked with the musician Stìnio Mendes, Barbatuques developed different techniques of body percussion, vocal percussion, tap dance and musical improvisation in their collective experiences, which also enhanced the individual ones of every member.

Their innovative way of making music and the numerous possibilities of extracting sounds from the body have made the group recognized and active in both the artistic and educational environments, and has led to the creation of musical performances, albums, training courses and workshops, which are been brought to more than 20 countries around the world. The work of the Barbatuques has contributed significantly to body music, which has spread throughout the world as a contemporary aesthetic and an important educational tool.
With 13 components, Barbatuques travels in Brazil and abroad with regular programs and workshops in companies, schools, cultural foundations, educational institutions and for major events. The group has released five albums: the latest dedicated to children “Sà 1 Pouquionho” (2018), “AY” (2016), “Tum Pà” (2012),“Corpo do Som” (2002) and “O Segui eNte ” (2005); the DVD “Corpo do Som ao Vivo” (2007) and “Tum Pà ao Vivo” (2014). During their career, the Barbatuques have received the “TIM Brazilian Music Award” as the best group of MPB – Brazilian Popular Music (2006).

Among the most important events and international tours, the highlights are: participation as a protagonist in the closing ceremony of the Rio Olympic Games (2016); participation in the World Cup in Africa (2010) and the official FIFA event in Johannesburg for the announcement of the 2014 World Cup; presence in the previous six editions of the International Body Music Festival (USA, Brazil and Turkey); participation in fairs and exhibitions, such as the Frankfurt Book Fair (2013) and Expo Shanghai (China – 2010); presentations at major festivals such as Europalia Festival (Belgium – 2011), Paleo Festival and Ella Fitzgerald Festival in Geneva (Switzerland – 2008), Nyon Festival (France – 2008), Lollapalooza Festival – Brazil (2014), as well as performances in Spain, Lebanon , USA, among others.

Among the most recent works, we can highlight the participation in the soundtrack of the film Rio 2 (2014 – Fox Film/Blue Sky), both in the soundtrack as two original compositions: “Beautiful Creatures”, played together with Andy Garcia and Rita Moreno, and “Don’t Go Away,” starring Anne Hathaway and Flèvia Maia.
During the same period, the group also participated in the soundtrack of the award-winning film “O Menino e o Mundo”, by director Abreu, together with Nana Vasconcelos and Emicida, and worked in the coordination and preparation of all the Globo television cast for the video -clip “Um Novo Tempo”, the traditional message for the end of the year from this TV channel. Additionally, Barbatuques is featured in the soundtrack of Educao.doc (2014), a documentary by Lais Bodansky and Luiz Bolognesi, which highlights innovative projects within public elementary school management.

The technique developed by Barbatuques is increasingly used in Brazilian schools – private or public – and is gaining strength among educators due to its ease of implementation, simplicity and low cost for institutions. The activities proposed by the group develop creativity, coordination and psychomotor perception of oneself and of others.
Barbatuques is constantly in artistic and pedagogical research, and is currently investing in new educational publications and new shows.
