Few voices in the world are as deeply rooted in American indie-rock as that of Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power, whose soulful dark-folk songwriting is instantly recognizable. With over twenty-five years of distinguished career in music, Cat Power is among the most respected and influential artists and producers.
The tenth studio album, ‘Wanderer’, released in October 2018, remains her most personal work to date: “The 11 tracks of ‘Wanderer’ tell what my journey has been up to here“, says Chan. “How I lived my life, wandering from city to city with my guitar, to tell my story, with the utmost respect for all those who, before me, had already done so. The folk singers and the blues singers, and everybody else too, really. Everyone has traveled, and I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to do the same”.
Written between Los Angeles and Miami over the last few years, ‘Wanderer‘ marks a turning point in Cat Power‘s private and musical life, representing both the quintessence of her discography and an oncoming inner maturity. After the release of ‘Sun’ (2012), Marshall has spent the last six years between travel, family life and decisive moments of record breaks, which have somehow marked the passage of time, between ups and downs, helping to strengthen the Cat Power personality. Produced by the artist herself and by Rob Schnapf (Elliott Smith, Beck) at the mixer, ‘Wanderer‘ features numerous collaborations with longtime friends, including the vocal cameo with Lana Del Rey.
Cat Power compositional talent – intimate and minimal – and her music have undergone constant evolution over the years, passing from dark-folk to rock, gospel, country-blues and soul, up to electronic rhythms and funky.
With ten studio albums and three EPs, Marshall considers ‘Wanderer‘ “a renaissance”, and this is exactly what this charismatic and ambitious album conveys, a decisive breaking point already anticipated by the previous ‘Sun’. While ‘Moon Pix‘ (1998) was about extreme isolation to survive a huge struggle, in ‘Sun‘ what transpires is “not to look back, get up and move forward with confidence towards your future, with strength and fulfillment ”. And if ‘Sun’ lays the foundations for a rebirth, ‘Wanderer‘ is the confirmation.
In 2022 Cat Power released “Covers”, which contains her versions of Billie Holiday’s “I’ll Be Seeing You”, Jackson Browne’s “These Days”, Lana del Rey’s “White Mustang”. In 2023 her new special project, Cat Power Sings Dylan, celebrates the 1966 Royal Albert Hall concert, the legendary show that disrupted the acoustic folk world by presenting Dylan’s music in an electric guise.
