COMPANY WAYNE MCGREGOR

Biography

Born in Stockport, United Kingdom, in 1970, Wayne McGregor CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) is one of the most influential choreographers and directors on the contemporary international dance scene.
He leads Studio Wayne McGregor, a creative network that pushes the boundaries of bodily intelligence through dance, design, and technology. While rooted in choreography, McGregor’s work extends across multiple disciplines including technology, visual arts, cinema, opera, and education, mirrored by the activities of Company Wayne McGregor, whose productions tour internationally.
Wayne McGregor is Resident Choreographer at The Royal Ballet — the first and only artist from a contemporary dance background to hold this position. He has created eighteen works for the company that have redefined classical language, from Chroma, winner of the Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production, to Woolf Works, inspired by the life and writings of Virginia Woolf.
His choreography is performed by leading companies worldwide, including the Ballet de l’Opéra national de Paris, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, New York City Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet, and San Francisco Ballet.
McGregor has also created choreography for theatre productions (Old Vic, National Theatre, Royal Court), opera (Dido and Aeneas and Acis and Galatea for La Scala and the Royal Opera House), film (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Sing, Mary Queen of Scots), music videos for Radiohead and The Chemical Brothers, fashion collaborations with Nick Knight and Gareth Pugh, advertising campaigns, and television projects.
He is Professor of Choreography at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. Among his numerous awards and honors are two Time Out Awards, two Olivier Awards, a Prix Benois de la Danse, and two Golden Mask Awards.
McGregor also holds a degree with honors from the University of Leeds, honorary doctorates from Plymouth University, Leeds University, UAL, and the University of Chester, and is part of the Circle of Cultural Fellows at King's College London. In 2017 he received an Honorary Fellowship from the British Science Association.
In 2021, he was appointed Director of the Dance Department of the Biennale di Venezia.
