Notes on the Works
Both choreographies are part of the celebrated Numerical Series, the distinctive project developed by TAO Dance Theater, based in Beijing. Each work in the series is titled according to the number of dancers involved.
Created for thirteen dancers, 13 unfolds through a tripartite structure, exploring three modes of bodily relationship: solo, duet, and ensemble.
Beginning from the unity of the group, the choreography progressively fragments the dancers into shifting formations marked by sudden alternations between slow motion and acceleration. The work reflects the “complexity of the physical world, where bodies constantly collide, connect, separate, fall, and rebound,” within a choreographic form that is both rigorous and open-ended.
A study of rhythm for fourteen dancers, 14 employs rapid shifts in movement to reveal the infinite possibilities between stillness and motion.
The result of a highly complex dynamism, the work pushes the vocabulary of the Circular Movement System — the movement research method developed by Tao Ye and Duan Ni with their dancers — to its limits.
Points, lines, and planes intersect throughout space, reducing the performance to pure movement while unfolding the full spectrum of its expressive possibilities.
