A live adaptation of Dylan Thomas’s radio masterpiece

Five years after the passing of Renato Striglia—DJ, iconic voice of Turin’s Murazzi scene, founder of Radio Banda Larga and passionate advocate of radio drama—Vinicio Capossela has chosen to bring to life the project Striglia cherished for more than twenty years: an Italian adaptation of Under Milk Wood, Dylan Thomas’s celebrated radio poem written in 1953.
Originally conceived for radio, Thomas’s masterpiece unfolds over the course of a single day in the imaginary village of Llareggub, a choral community populated by eccentric, innocent and tragic characters whose lives are shaped by dreams, desires, obsessions and deeply human fragilities. It is a small universe where the everyday and the fantastic coexist, and where every voice contributes to the collective breath of a community.
Striglia envisioned his own interpretation of the work: an adaptation capable of transforming the Welsh village into a universal place, a reflection of every town and every form of humanity. He never had the opportunity to complete that vision.
Since 2020, Capossela has embraced this creative legacy, transforming the original idea into a project that intertwines memory, poetry and soundscapes.
“There are two powerful reasons,” says Capossela, “for bringing this poem of voices to completion: to remember Renato and realize the project that mattered most to him; and to breathe in the bustling humanity that Thomas’s text gives us, a precious reminder in an age of growing dehumanization.”
The project unfolds across three complementary forms: a radio drama, a theatrical production currently in development, and an original album.
