Il remix su YouTube ha raccolto ad oggi più di 200.000.000 di spettatori. La versione originale di Reckoning Song (One Day) ha superato i 27.000.000 di spettatori.

L’album Agnorisis, pubblicato nel 2020, è un trionfo del suo talento e maturità artistica, con irresistibili suoni soul, blues, funk, pop di qualità. Quattro i singoli estratti dall’album: Earth Odyssey, Lost Horse, Anagnorisis (il cui video è di Wim Wenders), 900 Days.

Mentre i precedenti album, tra cui ‘Different Pulses’ o ‘The Reckoning’, sono stati scritti in un paio di settimane, per il nuovo disco il processo creativo è stato altamente influenzato dalla natura e dal silenzio, quasi ne seguisse i ritmi. “I remember learning to cut olive branches to prepare the trees for next year. I was astonished to see how much of the tree had to be cut in order to help it live better. Local farmers showed me that by cutting many of the branches, more air was reaching the inside of the tree, more sun, making it stronger and more resilient to parasites and disease. I tried to do the same with my songs. Cut, trim and remove big parts for the song to use its energy to grow stronger roots and a stronger structure. Take time and let the song grow naturally” afferma Asaf Avidan su ‘Anagnorisis’, pubblicato su etichetta Artist First.
Il titolo si rifà ad una parola coniata da Aristotele per definire quel particolare ed improvviso momento in cui si rivela il proprio carattere, la propria identità, trascendendo dall’ignoranza alla conoscenza. Ogni brano del nuovo disco sembra riecheggiare con radici profonde che scavano verso l’interno con strutture curate e precise, arricchite da correnti musicali che spaziano dall’hip-hop anni ’90 al pop più attuale, fino alla musica gospel.

“I was listening to Thom Yorke, The Fugees, David Bowie, Old school Jazz, even contemporary pop like Billie Eilish or Kanye West. I would take something from each one and mix it all into a schizophrenic jungle of characters, all working from within myself. Somehow this mixture of characters and sounds was able to tell a clearer picture of how I felt… of who I am… more than just one voice ever could.”

Tutte le voci contenute in ‘Anagnorisis’ sono di Asaf Avidan, che ha registrato alcune strofe fino a dodici volte per sovrapporre, con differenti tonalità, la stessa voce. Anche tutti gli strumenti nel disco sono stati suonati solamente da Asaf. Mille sfumature che appartengono ad un’unica figura, in grado di spaziare dal falsetto al baritono fino alla sua inconfondibile tonalità vocale androgina.

Il disco è stato registrato in parte nel suo piccolo studio a Tel Aviv, dove Asaf è stato affiancato dal fidato collaboratore Tamir Muskat, già al lavoro su ‘Different Pulses’ e ‘Gold Shadow’, ed in parte, causa lockdown, nella propria casa in Italia, ma questo ha favorito la sua libertà a poter suonare e registrare anche in piena notte, lasciandosi trascinare dal flusso creativo e dal magico silenzio. Il vero ‘Anagnorisis’ per Asaf Avidan, la vera rivelazione, è che la complessità, la molteplicità e la confusione sono parte dell’esistenza umana. Di conseguenza, non c’è mai un solo momento di chiarezza che rappresenti più verità di qualsiasi altro.
