Un vero e proprio mostro sacro che nella sua carriera ha saputo spaziare con successo e importanti riconoscimenti tra tante forme d’arte: musica, film, scrittura, fotografia, scultura e installazioni.
Troppo spesso si è abusato dell’espressione “artista multimediale”, ma se c’è qualcuno che può fregiarsi realmente di questo titolo è proprio lei. Nel corso della sua carriera ha svolto innumerevoli ruoli ed è sempre riuscita a coniugare la sperimentazione sull’elettronica con un linguaggio accessibile al grande pubblico. Nella sua figura si uniscono due filoni di tangenza tra arte e musica. Da un lato c’è l’influenza della performance art (dall’antesignano John Cage fino al gruppo Fluxus), con la commistione tra il corpo dell’artista, protagonista dell’azione che costituisce l’opera, e il medium tecnologico rappresentato dal video, che ne preserva la memoria. Dall’altra c’è l’avanguardia elettronica che, con Varèse e Stockhausen, è entrata a far parte anche dei libri d’arte contemporanea. Si aggiunga una propensione tutta newyorkese per la poesia urbana, che la porterà a collaborare con figure come William Borroughs e Robert Wilson e sarà anche parte del rapporto artistico e sentimentale con Lou Reed. Ciò che distingue Anderson da tanti musicisti prestati all’arte è il fatto che per lei i due aspetti sono inscindibili e vivono uno in virtù dell’altro.
