Biography
Paola Biondi and Debora Brunialti are among the most established performers on the national and international scene in the piano duo repertoire, widely appreciated for their strong communicative power and consistently innovative, dynamic performances.
From an early age, they showed a particular interest in the piano duo ensemble. They trained at the “N. Paganini” Conservatory in Genoa under Lidia Arcuri, later refining their studies with Andrea Pestalozza and with leading international piano duo figures such as Alfons Kontarsky at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Katia Labèque at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, and Dario De Rosa and Maureen Jones at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole.
They are regularly invited to perform in major theaters and concert halls in Italy and abroad, including the Auditorium Parco della Musica and the Cappella Paolina at the Quirinale in Rome, Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, Sala Verdi in Milan, the Rudolfinum in Prague, the Rachmaninoff Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, the Colburn School in Los Angeles, and the Teatro Municipal in Santiago de Chile.
Their artistic work is distinguished by a constant exploration of contemporary repertoire. Numerous composers have written works dedicated to them, including Azio Corghi, Hugues Dufourt, Michele Dall’Ongaro, Giovanni Sollima, Carla Magnan, and Carla Rebora. Among the most significant premieres are Soleil de Proie by Dufourt and It’s Bis by Corghi, broadcast live by Euroradio from the Quirinale.
Alongside their concert activity, they develop interdisciplinary projects combining music, theater, dance, and poetry, collaborating with artists such as Bustric, Guido Barbieri, Enzo Restagno, and Balletto Teatro di Torino. They are also active in the jazz field, having worked with Stefano Bollani, Uri Caine, and Giorgio Gaslini.
Their discography includes recordings acclaimed by international critics. Their latest recording project, inspired by The Third Paradise by Michelangelo Pistoletto, conveys a message of peace and humanitarian awareness — a central theme of their artistic journey.
Both artists teach at the “N. Paganini” Conservatory in Genoa, where they founded a laboratory dedicated to the piano duo repertoire.
What critics say
“In the Biondi-Brunialti duo, the understanding seems to exist a priori, almost innate. When listening to Paola and Debora, one has the sensation of an artistically supreme outcome: as if a single pianist were playing…”
— Quirino Principe
“The determination — unmistakable — the enthusiasm, even contagious, and an overall result that fears no comparison. When, with humility, an ensemble achieves such results, it is fair to speak not only of musical quality, but of moral values as well.”
— Dario De Rosa
“As a composer, I had the opportunity to benefit from the artistic collaboration of the piano duo Paola Biondi and Debora Brunialti. I was fully satisfied. Their interpretations, built on fidelity to the score, are compelling both technically and emotionally. A piano duo worthy of attention and trust, not only for their unquestionable skill, but for their constant effort to expand and challenge the values of their interpretative path.”
— Azio Corghi
“My congratulations for the choice of repertoire and for the splendid performance.”
— Aldo Bennici
