Danilo Rossi & The New Gipsy Project

Danilo Rossi – viola
Albert Florian Mihai – accordion
Marian Serban – cymbalom
Nicolae Petre – double-bass

This project was born from an idea of Danilo Rossi, First viola of the La Scala theater in Milan and of the Roma ensemble The New Gipsy Project: to anchor the popular tradition to the repertoire of the great classical composers who were inspired by traditional gypsy music. A geographical and cultural journey that crosses the Balkans and authors such as Dvoràk, Brahms and Bartok, with a multi-faceted and extremely versatile ensemble that interprets, among others, these three pillars of the history of music, different from each other and yet similar in one thing: the fascination towards the rich gypsy folkloristic repertoire. A journey looking to the East, from which all Western music has drawn so much. Frenzied rhythms and a continuous challenge of notes.

“I wanted to understand the Roma world and I was fascinated by the stories of these three gypsies. Because that is what they call each other, in spite of stereotypes. And today I aspire to be elected an honorary gypsy” (Danilo Rossi).

Chosen at just twenty years of age by Riccardo Muti for the role of First viola at La Scala in Milan, Danilo Rossi is the youngest instrumentalist in the history of the Scala theater to have held this role. He has performed all over the world in the most prestigious theaters and festivals and collaborated with the most important conductors and soloists in the world as well. New Gipsy Project is made up of instrumentalists from Bucharest, all children of art and who arrived after various experiences in Italy, boasting collaborations with artists such as Moni Ovadia, Ennio Morricone, Samuele Bersani, Fabrizio Bentivoglio, Vinicio Capossela, Stefano Bollani, Emir Kusturica.
